After consideration of everyone's points, this is the initial way forward:

1) Advertising. Either direct from companies we talk to or via Google ads or equivalent. This way we should keep the ads appropriate to us, as we can control what companies we accept and Google ads are based on keywords on the page. If anyone knows any companies that are looking to advertise and are appropriate, please put them in touch. Mr. Goldberg: your suggestion is interesting: could you do some more research on that, please?

2) UD Merchandise. We're looking into what types of merchandise to come up with. The main problem is that to get them cheap enough for them to be profitable we have to order in bulk, and then we have to sell them all or face a loss. Any suggestions as to what to produce would be welcome: what would you want to see? Of course we've considered suggestions so far.

3) Paypal Donate button. Common to many sites/organisations like UD, this would allow site users with Paypal accounts to donate whatever amount they see fit to support us.

Of course this is our initial plan, and may change according to circumstances. Feel free to reply with any thoughts you have on these: t5his thread will be left open as these are implemented to allow for feedback, so if you like or don't like anything let us know.

OK. Step 3, the easiest to implement, is up. You should all notice a PayPal 'Donate' button at the top right of every page.

Thoughts? Feedback?

Yep Ed I can indeed, in fact I'll try and arrange that you go to the free all day conference and learn all about it as I did...if you wish to speculate to accumulate i think the whole income generating software package & sales tips costs about £2000. You also get a free lunch & filofax with it  Wink

is there a way to have the current donation total displayed beneath the donate button? i think this would encourage people to donate more, if they could see other people's efforts (you know, community stuff)

£2000 is erhaps a bit of a stretch for the UD war chest at the moment... but the free Filofax is tempting!

Good idea. I don't think there's an automatic way to do it, but I may be able to insert one manually. I'll look into it.

Just a quick add on Mike to previous ideas...was listening to Radio Sheffield this morning who carry advertising slots...maybe worthy a try.

By the way all if you haven't listened in yet ...get tuned in...its like Alan Partridge for real...the most banal phone-in sessions , "top tips", "amazing facts" and mundane discussion topics ever mooted. I love it ! yesterday some DJ was droning on for six minutes in solemn detail about what time he and his wife went to bed and how had problems readjusting his car clock....  A-haaaa!      Smiley

Thanks for the extra tip. Don't worry, I know only too well the Partridgesque banality of Radio Sheffield. The horror, the horror...

We have a new approach that might allow us to avoid advertising. All members should take a look at the new 'The Great Exhibition' part of this site and look at what's going on there. Of course, comments on it are welcome here...

Ed...why did you lock that thread when there's new coffers proffering themselves daily ...today just in in Yorkshire Evening Post page 5:

£50,000 cash giveaway for worthy community projects:

To apply for a slice of this funding via Leeds Community Foundation go to:

                    www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.u k/communitycashgiveaway

and follow the links.

Suggest you also approach Arts Council & National Lottery Funding too.

It's only money !

Hey Goldie,

Thanks for the suggestion. We locked that thread, but started a new one... where this post now appears!

We're tentatively moving forward with carrying ads. At the moment they should only be after the last post on each thread: we're trying to keep it unobtrusive.

Opinions welcome on whether they're approriate, relevant, useful or if they should even be there...

Carpe diem,
Mike.
