Yeah, the tree's like a sentry, waiting and watching for - what? Could be a piece of writing in this. Depending on the age of the tree, it could have seen many things. The original inhabitants of the land, the coming of European settlers, the gold rush, the rise of reagan, the rise of surf culture, modern humanity's retreat into fantasy - the list goes on.

How about it, Will, a poem to accompany your photo?

A great idea of which I would have never thought.  I have a few things I scribbled down yesterday that I want to compose first.  But you seem to have captured the essence of the photo very well...might you give it a shot too?

I accept the challenge, Will! How about we both go away and have a hack at it, and then when we're ready jointly post what we've come up with? A poetic face-off, if you will.

A splendid idea indeed.  Maybe we can get some more folks in on this as well.

Which is in turn a splendid idea. Since the inspiration for this comes from your photo, maybe you could post this in 'The Agora' section and we could get more people involved? I wouldn't be so presumptuous. Wink

Hey I'm up for that, by the way that tree is near Carmel valley on the Big Sur coast I've been there it happens to be one of the most photographed trees in the world and from what I heard it is very old like one maybe two hundred years old

A lone sentry on the last few inches of America...and after that the Graet Orient...It's beautiful!!!
