Jeepers, Dandy, you used a blunderbuss for your first shot! Many targets hit with that one, and many of them deserving.

Agree wholeheartedly about the lack of anything worthwhile being published recently. I despair of a world in which Martin Amis is considered a literary giant. Vinegar-faced twat, and a shadow of his father.

And don't get me started on 'The DaVinci Code'.  Angry

Believe it or not, there is still decent fiction being produced, even though there is a lot of garbage, too.

Chuck Palahniuk is a decent modern fiction writer who addresses a lot of society's ill and challenges cultural norms.

John Irving is a phenominal storyteller and still writing.  Anyone that writes fiction should appreciate his techniques.

Thomas Pynchon is another great modern fiction writer, who is still producing work, though it often takes him 10 years or so to churn out a new novel.

I could go on. There are plenty of decent poets writing, too, though poetry is not nearly as popular as the fiction market.

There is also good music out there, but not really anything in the mainstream. Some good stuff underground, though, especially in the indy/punk circuits, even underground hip-hop that does not focus on consumerism.

I definitely feel your pain about music.  I'd much rather go to prison for life for murdering Brittany Spears than to have to watch her perform half naked.

I competely disagree that all punk rock has been watered down and part of some "facist" consumerism.  I've been part of the independant punk rock scene for  a while now, and I have also run my own 'zines and currently write for a decent punk rock/indy publication out of Philadlephia.  True, there are a lot of mainstream punk rock bands, if you want to even label them punk rock, that go completely against the DIY ethics that have always thrived in the punk scene.

Also, even near me, there are plenty of independant venues that host bands that still carry the banner of punk rock.  There are also a lot of people that run ethically-sound labels and put out 'zines with the same energetic/political spirit of the first and second wave punk rock movements.

Furthermore, there are plenty of passionate, hard-working punk bands still around: Defiance, Ohio, The Lawrence Arms, Gaslight Anthem, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, etc. etc.  I could go on and on and name bands that create forceful sing-alongs and fist-pumping dances at their shows.

There are also plenty of great labels out there that hold true to DIY ethics: No Idea Records, Plan-it-X Records, Jade Tree, etc. etc.

Sorry, I just get passionate when it comes to this topic.

Poverty -- be justifying
For so foul a thing

Time does not exist. Except upon your wrist. There is no such thing as a universe only a perpetuity of interdimensional multiverses. It's all in the wrist action.
