Title: On Revenge
Post by: Mr. Goldberg on September 19, 2008, 12:09:14 PM

"On Revenge" by FRANCIS BACON (1625)

REVENGE is a kind of wild justice; which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out. For as the first wrong, it doth but offend the law, but the revenge of that law pulleth the law out of office. Certainly, in taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy, but in passing it over he is superior, for it is a prince's part to pardon. And Salomon, I am sure, saith, It is the glory of a man to pass by an offence.

That which is past is gone, and irrevocable, and wise men have enough to do with things present and to come: therefore they do but trifle with themselves, that labour in past matters.

Some , when they take revenge, are desirous the party should know whence it cometh: this is the more generous. For the delight seemeth to be not so much in doing the hurt as in making the party repent: but base and crafty cowards are like the arrow that flieth in the dark...

This is certain, that a man who studies revenge keeps his own wounds green, which otherwise would heal and do well...

...Thoughts on Revenge from a Mr. F. Bacon favourite of Queen Elizabeth I (and one of the possible contenders for the true identity of William shakespeare) till she changed her mind and had him banged up in the tower for suspected espionage. Adventurer, explorer, diplomat , writer, and philosopher. Exciting times he lived in gave rise to  the genre of Revenge Tragedy by playwrights like Marlowe, Webster, Kydd, Middleton, Tourneur whose plays   portray all manner of gruesome revenge scenarios - including torture, poisoning, rape, mutilation and murder to gruesome excess.

REVENGE...DOES IT INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE ?

Revenge does inspire me to write to a certain extent, but it usually sucks worse than my "good" writing.
